More than 30 years of sewing experience, a love of teaching, the near extinction of quality sewing classes, and kind pressure from many persistent friends resulted in my establishing…
“Homegrown Sewing Academy”.
Homegrown Sewing Academy is a comfortable environment in my home that builds a strong foundation in sewing for ladies and gentlemen, ages 8/9 through adult. Whether you’re interested in sewing as a hobby, an art and/or for practical reasons, our classes are designed to provide a valuable foundation to build upon.
My sincere goals are not just to teach you how to sew, but to encourage your new interest, inspire your personal creativity, and even show you ways to save money. Keeping sewing projects economical is nearly impossible in today’s world of mass market productions, monopolizing retailers, and over priced pattern companies.
I’ve designed “Session 1” so that you are not required to own a sewing machine. Besides the class fee and final project cost, your initial investment is just an 8 week commitment. If you don’t own a machine, you’re welcome to use one of mine. At some point during “Session 1”, I do encourage you to ask friends or family to borrow one of those “dusty” machines, or consider purchasing a slightly older, used model. Included in Session 1 is a comprehensive book I created. We’ll continue to refer to this book in future classes. The final project is a hand bag or tote (your choice).
Session 2 classes are a progression from Session 1. There will be more emphasis on pattern reading as we begin garment construction. The final project is a skirt. If the student doesn’t have their own machine for this class, they are still welcome to borrow mine.
Compared to sewing classes connected with chain stores and dealers, I hope you find my classes to be more cost effective, more informative, and personalized. I try to be considerate of individual budgets and won’t pressure you to buy something you don’t need. Salesmanship isn’t one of my gifts anyway . Throughout my classes I gladly offer tips and advice on how to save money when purchasing machines and sewing supplies.
